UCLA Women’s Tennis Looks to Avenge February Loss to Ole Miss in NCAA Sweet 16

Ole Miss was one of just four teams to beat the UCLA women’s tennis team during the regular season. This afternoon, the Bruins get a second chance to beat the Rebels.

Back on February 10th, it came down to a deciding third set on court four. Up until that point, UCLA and Ole Miss had split the first six points.

UCLA scored first by taking the doubles point. Jada Hart gave the Bruins a 2-0 lead by defeating Natalie Suk, 6-2, 6-2. Ole Miss got on the board when Arianne Hartono beat Ena Shibahara in straight sets on court one. Anna Vrbenska tied the match up for the Rebels by beating Alaina Miller and Sabina Machalova gave Ole Miss a 3-2 lead by beating Terri Fleming.

But, the Bruins weren’t done.

Abi Altick tied it back up at 3-3 by getting past Alex Bortles.

That left it to UCLA’s Ayan Broomfield and Tea Jandric of Ole Miss to decide the match. Broomfield won the first set 7-5, but dropped the second set, 4-6, to force a deciding third set which would determine not just the winner between them, but also the winner between the Bruins and the Rebels. Unfortunately, Jandric prevailed, 6-2, to give the win to Ole Miss.

But, now, the Bruins have a chance to avenge that loss.

Unlike February’s match, the Bruins won’t be disadvantaged by the start time. In February, the match began at 7 am PT. Today’s start time is 4 pm PT.

The same can’t be said for the weather. The forecast for Winston-Salem this evening is scattered thunderstorms. Hopefully, the Bruins are able to withstand the weather to come out ahead.

If UCLA can prevail, they will move on to the NCAA Quarterfinals against the winner of #13 seed Pepperdine vs. #4 seed Georgia Tech on Saturday at 1 pm PT.

This is your UCLA Bruins vs. Ole Miss Rebels women’s tennis open thread.

Go Bruins!!! Bring home 117!!!
